Haikou City Centre International Design Competition, China

WND has been recognized for its urban design and community planning expertise having placed in an international design competition to design a new city centre for the City of Haikou, China. Covering over 200 hectares (500 acres) on a former airport site, WND's design incorporated over 66 million square feet of residential and non-residential floor area placed over a modified grid pattern which is broken into manageable-sized development parcels. The grid is an extension of the surrounding Haikou City street pattern, utilizing avenues and nodes to connect to important civic features and areas.

Design elements include the conversion of the existing east-west airport runway into a grand avenue, complete with light-rail transit, bicycle lanes, and generous tree-lined pedestrian walkways and public green space. The physical and spiritual heart of the design is focused around the concept of a "Teleport" community, which has at its centre a 100-storey mixed-use tower that incorporates a telecommunications tower and centre and an interactive pedestrian plaza at its base. Critical to the implementation of our design was the preparation of detailed design guidelines to control bulk, scale, materials, and public spaces and parks which cover a significant portion of the site.
